Most rules for understanding documents are straightforward, such as ensuring the date is always displayed on the top left of the document. Sometimes they’re more complicated, such as the date following the word “date”. Most difficult of all (but not impossible) is when a broader understanding of a document structure is needed to disambiguate similarly labelled items, or to identify information submerged within a non-unique context.

For freight documents, the validation rules commonly convert and validate data points such as: Carrier name, BOL #, Charge details, Container numbers, Weights, Delivery route, Customer name, Bill to, Ship To, Etc. Conversion is carried out to address carrier codes to reflect the reference for freight methods (Air, Sea, Land) Container size, weight, perishable goods, temp/humidity control etc.

Other technologies (such as OCR) attempt to convert a picture into characters, meaning the quality of the data captured is directly correlated with the quality of the picture presented.
